THE OTHER PASSION IN MY LIFE...

BEFORE THERE WAS DANIEL...

BEFORE THERE WAS TEACHING...

THERE WAS...

VIN SCULLY & LOS ANGELES DODGERS BASEBALL!
What a beautiful day for a ball game...
Did you know that dodger dogs and garlic fries have
no calories on opening day? It's true!
Dodger greats from 50 years (-Davey Lopes)
gather on the pitching mound.

Is there any place on earth you'd would rather be?

It's Another Girl!

Welcome Iris Ruby Bufano!
6 pounds 12 ounces, 19 inches
Congrats Mom (Tonya), Dad (Carlo), and big bro' Julian!

That makes 5 girls (Molly, Allison, Samantha, Isabel, and Iris) to 1 boy (Xaveer) in the last 8 months!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!

It was three years ago today when I met a little, four year old boy with buzzed hair named Daniel.  He didn't say much and wasn't sure how to play with the puzzle I bought him.
Our first birthday and cake!
Our 3rd birthday cake tonight. We had dinner with Aunt Vickie and Uncle Wayne at my favorite BBQ joint.  Auntie Susan, mommy wanted me to tell you that it's a white cake with butter cream frosting and filled with fresh strawberries and custard... from Von's!

Happy Birthday David-Edward!

The handsome, young man to my right (the one with the cap and gown that is)was my student from the ages of 4 to 8.  He is celebrating his 19th birthday today! Go UCLA!

A DAY IN THE LIFE ... aka what I did on Sunday

7:30am:  Trying to convince Daniel to give me 30 more minutes of sleep.

7:31am:  Get up to hang out with Daniel... who take 60 seconds to mean 30 minutes.

10:30am: Drop off Daniel at Danny's house while I go to school to work on completing Student-Led Conference Stations, Sub Plans, and the school Newsletter.

12:10pm:  Drive to Danny's house to pick up them up for the Wiggles Concert.

12:20pm: Convince a protesting Daniel that if he does not want to go to the Wiggles Concert, that I will take someone else because I have 3 tickets and refuse to let his ticket go to waste. Danny's sister Karen is waiting in the wings.

12:25pm: Off to the Nokia Theater with Danny and an angry child who does not like it when his mommy "threatens" to take another child to the Wiggles concert.

12:35pm:  Pay $15 to park across the street from the Nokia Theater.

12:45pm: Find seats, buy popcorn, and pay $3.75 for water in a bottle!
1:45pm:  Four grown men with accents in primary color shirts, a dinosaur, a dog, an octopus, and a captain with a feather sword sings and dances.

2:30pm: Mommy falls asleep during "Fruit Salad."

3:05pm: It's Over! It's Over! (Where are the Jonas Brothers when you need them?)

4:00 - 6:00pm: Bathe, feed, dress, and kiss goodbye!

The Class of 2007!

Our dessert for the evening.

With "golden boy" Nader and wonderful Linda!

TEACHERS NIGHT OUT!
If Daniel could only have teachers like these,
life would be good!
A nice evening out with great friends celebrating TEACHERS!

11:15pm: Finish up the school's newsletter, check out box scores, update blog...

TEACHERS RULE!!!

The best thing about being a Milken Educator is that you get invited to the National Conference!  How cool is it to spend time with other teachers that are just as passionate about teaching and learning as you are? Let me tell you it's pretty darn cool!
Educators as Leaders, that's the theme of the Milken Educators Conference this year.  I was invited to participate on a panel with some amazing leaders in the field. Yes, I know I am considered a teacher leader too, but when you sit next to articulate and charismatic educators like Yvonne Chan and Nader Twaal, it can be just a little intimidating. I made it through, yay!  And it was nice when teachers walked up to say they appreciated what I had to share. Although there are some days... I love being a teacher.

FINALLY!

I can tie my shoelaces now!!!
And I can do it more than once!

THINGS LEARNED ON A LONG AIRPLANE RIDE BACK TO LOS ANGELES...

  • Airplane rides from New York to Los Angeles are LONG!
  • If you misbehave on a long airplane ride from New York to Los Angeles you will not be able to play your gamecube until you are 18 years old!

  • You can watch DVD's, sing Jonas Brother songs, or play Mario Party for so long before you go stir crazy and drive your mommy crazy!
  • An added bonus: you can learn to tie your shoelaces while waiting for the LAX shuttle to parking lot C!

THINGS WE LEARNED IN NYC

  • Relatives like to talk about the size of people's ears. Really! This is true they do talk about people's ears.
  • Rollerskating in a 100 year old Library is strictly prohibited, unless you don't get caught!
  • The N line will take you just about anywhere you need to go. If you just stick to the N line you can go to Brooklyn to visit your cousins with the cool video gaming equipment, or Chinatown to "not eat" Chinese food, or Time Square back to your hotel, or Central Park to pet the horses...
  • Not all hot dogs with mustard and sauerkraut... ordered from a cart on the streets of New York City are good! Mommy was super disappointed!
  • There are no horse carriages in Central Park when it rains. We were disappointed we couldn't ride them. Mommy said next time we need to come when it's summer because she always comes in Spring and every time it rains.
  • There are not too many kids walking the streets of New York City. Mommy can totally understand why now!!!
  • You can be in a city with so many wonderful foods choices and still eat Happy Meals at McDonalds for dinner three nights in a row! I don't understand what the problem is here although Mommy keeps telling me that it's just not right!
  • If you are playing around and standing too close to the yellow (do not pass) line on the subway, a man will yell at you... and your mommy too! Of course mommy is always yelling at me to not stand so near the yellow line, but I am fearless and know I won't fall in. I don't understand why she keeps grabbing me and saying, "You are so going to get it!"
  • You can walk around in New York City wearing a Gryffindor cloak and no one will look twice... well maybe a few people will.
  • If you sit in the front row of the Lion King, you will see a lot of bare chests all night and then want your mommy to let you take off your shirt and paint your skin red like Simba, right there and then. Mommy said nice boys who are not performing on stage do not take off their clothes when it's 30 degrees outside. She said I can do that when I get back in Los Angeles in the privacy of our own home.
  • If you keep talking back to your mommy in public, you will eventually face the "music" when you get back to the hotel and worse, she will leave you at home next time she travels outside of California! Mommy said I will not see New York City again until I learn to be responsible, whatever that means.
  • Broadway musicals are so cool! I want to be Bert and dance on walls. I want to be Flounder and skate with Ariel. I want to be Simba and show off my bare chest while doing cartwheels on stage and swinging through the air.

A Rainy Last Day...

There is nothing like having New York Pizza for breakfast!

Water and a donut from Starbucks are good too.

Mommy convinced me to walk 10 blocks
to the NYC Library...in the rain!
She let me choose where I wanted to go
and I chose the library!
The library is over 100 years old and has
two lion statues guarding it.

My feet are tired and I don't want to
take anymore pictures!

The Lion King on Broadway! Mommy told
me we were going to sit in the 2nd row tonight.
She would rather sit a few rows back, but
I love the front!

Hey! What do you know, we are not in the
2nd row, we are in the front row again!
There is no row A!
We had to put the camera away after this picture... the lady said so!

Cool Things about the Musical, THE LITTLE MERMAID...

1. Having a "tantrum-free" evening with Mommy,
and only walking 2 blocks to the theater!
2.  Front row seats behind the orchestra pit!
3.  Mermaids and sea animals were all wearing
Heeley's!!!  I wear Heeley's too!

4. Flounder was super-cool and he was just a kid!
"He has a strong voice."

Top 5 Comments/Questions About Daniel

Are those curls really his?
As far as I know they are.
Why don't you cut his hair?
It's too long!
Thank you Chinatown barber!
What is that thing on his face?
Just Daniel's luck to grow another "cold sore" before he meets
"straight to the point" relatives.
Why is he so skinny?
He doesn't eat!
Does he speak Chinese?
He can count to 10, say eat dinner, and chinese sausages!

Most Frequently Heard Utterances on the Streets of Manhattan...

on Tuesday afternoon between a 7 year old and his mommy...
"No! I don't need to go potty?"
"Nobody loves me!"
"No, I am not hungry."
"I am not cold!"
"I'm not going to be on your side! I am on PoPo's side now!"
"You're mean!"
"How would you like that?"
"Is that nice?"
"But I want it!"
"Lets ride the subway."
"This is what I have always wanted!"
"Can I wear this to the Little Mermaid?"

Daniel in NYC Day Three...

Someday mommy will show this picture to my girlfriend and I will not be amused by it! Yes, I went to sleep wearing my new shoes. Mommy said I could since she didn't have to wash the sheets and we were on vacation.
Today for breakfast I started off with a donut from a street cart. They were out of bagels because I am still sleeping according to California time and people in New York usually have breakfast before noon.
My second breakfast was at McDonalds! I ate a breakfast burrito and check out my cool new Transformer watch. It was my first street vendor purchase = $3.00 from a start of $5.00.
I just like to stand in front of roast duck and pork.  (Why eat them like everyone else?)
We dropped off PoPo at her cousin's apartment in Chinatown.
The $6.00 Chinatown haircut that mom tricked me into getting.
I just don't understand why I cannot get everything I want!!!
Me in front of Central Park. We didn't actually go into Central Park because when mommy said, "Lets go in and look at the ducks!" I thought why would I want to go look at ducks? I have seen them before.

There are horses pulling carriages near Central Park. I wanted to ride one. Mommy said we could tomorrow. She wanted to ask PoPo if she wanted to go with us since it's still $35 for 30 minutes whether it's one person or 3. I petted the horses. They all looked a little sad to me.

Mommy wanted to take me to this really cool toy store. It was near the 24/7 Apple Computer store on 5th Avenue. Mommy said she use to love to walk up and down this street when she would come to NYC but thought twice about it today since she wouldn't be able to window shop and run after a 7 year old boy at the same time.

This is the 3 headed-dog in one of the Harry Potter movies. They had some of the "creatures/animals" there on display in stuffed animals from the movies.

Instead of looking at all the cool stuff they had in the store, I was on a mission to find a Harry Potter costume! They had a Harry Potter shop in the toy store and I was determined to look for the entire outfit. I want to be Harry Potter!

Mommy asked the man behind the counter if they had any Harry Potter uniforms like Harry Potter wears in the movies. (The man behind the counter was wearing one, but none were on display in the store). Guess what? They had one left in a medium 5-7. Guess what size I wear?  Mommy decided to get it for me because the last time she was here with Auntie Sandra she took home twin, collectible, baby dolls for Ally and Miki that cost more than 10x my HP costume so she thought she was getting a better deal this time around.

Here is Harry Potter in Dylan's Candy Bar. Did you know that you can walk around New York City as Harry Potter and no one will say anything? I did get a lot of second looks and some smiles, but no one called me Harry Potter.

This is for Molly. Mommy loves peas and says that she wants Molly to love them too!

WHY IT IS GOOD TO HAVE CHINESE RELATIVES IN NYC...

Did you know that if you are a kid visiting relatives in New York City you get red envelopes? When the first PoPo's gave me a red envelope I said, "Gung Hay Fot Choy!" and they laughed. I think they were amused by me, but I didn't care, I got red envelopes!  Then I got more at dinner too!  Mommy said that she use to get some too when she would visit.  "Money is good for a kid!"

Mommy said that I shouldn't be so happy to get money because it's not polite. It's just good to have family and people that love you... but I got 20 bucks! Then I got more!  Life is good!

The final count for the day: $90 in cash and $10 worth of plastic Power Rangers -minus the white Ranger that I broke on the subway. (Little do I know but mommy has plans for my cash... it's called a savings account) ha ha ha...

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A CHINESE DINNER BANQUET...

aka: Daniel's first NYC Chinatown dinner banquet with PoPo and relatives...
Okay they said these were special clams, but I don't buy that so I passed. Mommy tried one and liked it. It was like a clam, but with a longer body. Brave mommy!
So mommy said these were snails. So I said "No thank you."  Mommy said she use to eat them when PoPo made them when she was little, but she hasn't had them for a long time. You have to use a toothpick to get them out. They taste like clams she said. Everything seems to taste like clams.
Another dish that I will not eat. It's got mushrooms, which mommy loves, but I don't, and it has squid, which mommy loves, but I don't,  and it has jellyfish which mommy will eat, but I don't. I don't think I am going to be eating much.
This steak with Chinese broccoli dish was ordered for me. It was okay, but I don't really like steak all that much either. Mommy loves Chinese broccoli, so she enjoyed it more than me.
Uncle Wayne, PoPo tried to order me some chinese fried chicken, you know the one that you like, but the NYC relatives said that was too dry and what would be better would be white-cut chicken with some sauce over it... and you know how much mommy "likes" white-cut chicken. I ate a little, mommy did too.  She loved the tofu (Oh, there is something familiar) and the chinese spinach. I ate a mouthful of a special fish that you can only get in NYC or so they tell me.
I am not really eating much, but they did get me a bowl of white rice! Yay! And I had my DS lite, so it was okay. I didn't throw a tantrum and mommy wasn't  embarrassed.
My PoPo's older sister sang us a song. Yes, it's true! She just got up and announced that she will now sing us a song, then she proceeded to sing it. It was really loud and I didn't understand it so I kept playing. Mommy listened respectful to the entire song.  PoPo said that was something she would do, whatever that means.
Picture of relatives #2: From left to right- The first lady is PoPo's old school mate in China. She and PoPo went to school together from 2nd grade... and to this day she tells the story that PoPo let her copy her work so she could pass school. PoPo said that she had it tough life as a young girl doing many chores like feeding the pigs, before she went to school, so it was hard to put studies ahead of real life. To this day, this nice lady credits PoPo for helping her succeed in school, although she doesn't recommend it, she also states to this day she cannot do math because she just copied it.  Next to PoPo's classmate is PoPo's cousin from this morning's breakfast, next to her is PoPo's older sister, seated is her husband, and behind PoPo is her niece, and my mommy's cousin.  The reason there are no "real" names to any of these people is that in Chinese custom, you cannot call anyone older than you by their first name. You have to address them according to title and relation, so mommy doesn't really know what their names are, so we basically call them uncles and aunts, but with a title.

Aunt Susan, mommy tried to not eat any fried foods today, but she thinks the tofu was fried and since that was one of her favorite dishes tonight, she ate several of them.  Chinese banquets in New York City are more "authentic" than the ones we have in California... so they tell us.  I don't eat much at Chinese banquets in Los Angeles anyway, so I will take their word for it. Mommy said this would be the only time she would allow me to play DS through the entire meal since I didn't understand what people were saying or what we were eating. Lucky me!

Everyone was super nice even though I pretended not to notice them. After all, I had to concentrate on getting Mario to win the game!
